What Is Sciatic Back Pain?

What is Sciatic back pain and how does it affect an individual, these are some questions people search for information on, when they experience some form of lower back pain. Pain in the back may be caused from a variety of ailments such as arthritis, a draft or cold or injury; however sciatica may usually be associated to a disc problem.

Sciatic back disc problems are usually in the form of "herniated disc", "bulging disc or pinched nerve", other terms may include slipped disc, torn disc or ruptured disc. Whatever the disc related name, the pain can vary from severe darts of shooting pain to being totally incapacitated. The first port of call should be a visit to your GP to get the best qualified advice when experiencing any form of back pain.

Sciatica refers to a nerve which originates in the sacral plexus which is a sort of a network of nerves in the lower back and pelvic area. Without getting into too technical terms one could say the sciatic nerve roots originate at the fourth and fifth lumbar spine (L4-L5).

This is the largest nerve in the human body which can measure up to three quarters of an inch thick and runs from the lower back down through the buttock down the thigh, on the outside of the knee and all the way down to the foot. This is the nerve which allows movement and feeling from the toes, ankle, calf, knee, thigh and buttock.

If you are experiencing pain lower back and leg pain, then you may have sciatica. If a person had an injury to their back from several different reasons they may have ruptured a disc which can cause pressure to be put on the sciatic nerve root or trap and pinch this nerve.

The result of this nerve being compressed in this way can cause pain the lower back or on different parts of the leg and it can also switch from one to the other leg. There are many treatments and exercises available to help you alleviate sciatic back pain.
